A hot tub should be a quiet hum and a gentle burble of water — so when it suddenly starts humming loudly, grinding, screeching, rattling or gurgling, it's unsettling. 1. Is the Water Level Too Low?
This is the number-one cause of gurgling and straining, and the easiest to fix. If the water drops below the intake — or below halfway up the skimmer on hardshell tubs — the pump starts sucking air instead of water. That gives you a sputtering, gurgling sound and makes the pump strain. Top the tub up above the minimum line and the noise often vanishes on its own.
2. Has It Just Been Refilled? (Airlock)
If the noise started right after a drain-and-refill, it's almost certainly an airlock — a pocket of air trapped in the pump housing (the volute) stopping water flowing. The pump ends up "dry-running" and screaming or gurgling. This is extremely common and completely fixable — see the burping steps below.
3. Is It Actually the Pump — or a Loose Panel?
A rhythmic rattle or buzz that comes and goes with vibration is very often a loose cabinet panel, screw or a pipe knocking against the frame — not the motor at all. Press a hand firmly on panels and pipework while it runs; if the noise changes or stops, you've found it. Tighten the fixings.
DIY Fix 1: Burp the Airlock
If you suspect trapped air (gurgling, especially after a refill), bleeding the pump usually restores smooth, quiet flow:
- Turn the pump off at the control panel.
- Make sure the water level is above the minimum — top up if needed.
- On hardshell tubs, locate the union fitting on the pump's intake pipe and loosen it slightly by hand until water trickles out and you hear the trapped air hiss free, then retighten (don't over-tighten — hand-tight plus a nudge is enough).
- On inflatable tubs, briefly detach and reattach the pump, or cycle the pump on and off a few times after refilling to shift the air pocket.
- Restore power and listen — the gurgle should be gone.

DIY Fix 2: Clear the Filter & Debris (Cavitation / Straining)
A high-pitched whine or a "hungry" straining hum is often cavitation — the pump fighting against a restricted water flow. The usual culprits are a clogged filter or debris on the intake screens, and it's very common in the hard-water areas around Bournemouth and Poole where scale builds up fast.
- Remove and rinse (or replace) the filter cartridge — a blocked filter is the single most common flow restriction.
- Check the intake screens and clear any leaves, grit, hair or scale.
- Make sure no valves are half-closed and no hoses are kinked.

- Tighten everything. Loose cabinet screws, panels and mounting bolts vibrate against the frame — go round and snug them up.
- Support the pipework. A pipe touching the cabinet wall drums like a speaker. A bit of foam or a cable tie to hold it clear works wonders.
- Add anti-vibration matting. A rubber mat or foam pad under the pump dampens the buzz that travels through the base.
When It's a Job for an Engineer
Grinding / Screeching → Worn Bearings
A steady grinding, gravelly or rumbling noise that gets worse over time is the classic sign of worn motor bearings — the little rings that let the shaft spin smoothly. They wear out with age, or prematurely if moisture or a small leak has got in (look for corrosion or damp near the motor). Turn the pump shaft by hand with the power off: if it's stiff, notchy or won't spin freely, the bearings are going. Left too long, seized bearings can burn out the whole motor — so this is worth catching early. Bearings or wet-end can often be replaced far cheaper than a whole pump.
Grinding with Debris → Impeller
A grinding or knocking that comes with weak jets can be debris caught in the impeller or a cracked/worn impeller itself. An engineer can open the wet end, clear it or fit a new impeller — a cheap part compared to a pump.
Loud Hum but Won't Turn → Start Capacitor or Seized Motor
If the pump hums loudly but the motor doesn't spin (no water movement, sometimes tripping out), the likely causes are a failed start capacitor (the component that gives the motor its kick to get going), a seized impeller/shaft, or incorrect input voltage. A capacitor is an inexpensive part, but it holds a charge and must be discharged and replaced by a professional. Don't leave a humming, non-turning pump powered on — it can overheat.
