Hot Tub Repair FAQ

Straight answers to the questions Lay-Z-Spa and inflatable hot tub owners ask us most — error codes, heating, leaks, costs and when to repair vs. replace.

Below are the questions we field most often from hot tub owners across Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch. Many problems are quick DIY fixes — we've flagged those — and for the rest, a local engineer can usually sort it in a single visit. Each answer links to a full guide where there's more detail.

Heating & Temperature

Why is my Lay-Z-Spa not heating up?

The most common cause is running the AirJets while heating — they pump cold air through the water and fight the heater. Turn the jets off while heating. Other culprits: a dirty filter restricting flow, a poorly seated lid losing heat overnight, no insulating mat under the tub on cold ground, or limescale on the heater element. Lay-Z-Spas heat slowly by design (around 1.5-2°C per hour), so allow 12-24 hours from cold with the lid on.

How long does a Lay-Z-Spa take to heat up?

Expect roughly 1.5-2°C per hour, so from cold tap water (10-15°C) it can take 12-24 hours to reach 38-40°C — longer in cold or windy weather. Keep the lid on, jets off while heating, and use a ground insulation mat to speed it up and cut running costs.

Error Codes

What does the E02 error code mean?

E02 means the pump can't detect adequate water flow. Usual causes: a clogged filter, kinked hoses, low water level, or a blocked impeller. Fix: rinse or replace the filter, top up the water, check the hoses, and power-cycle for 30 seconds. If E02 returns immediately, the flow sensor (reed switch) may need replacing.

What about E03, E04, E06 and E08?

  • E03 — cold-weather shutdown (water too cold to read)
  • E04 — thermal cut-out from overheating
  • E06 — timer / control board fault
  • E08 — power supply fault

Electrical & Safety

Why does my hot tub keep tripping the electrics?

Tripping the RCD usually means water has reached an electrical part — most often a cracked heater element leaking current to earth. Other causes: a faulty RCD plug, an unsuitable extension lead (never use one), moisture in the pump, or a damaged cable. Stop using the tub and have it tested — repeated tripping is a safety issue.

Water & Maintenance

How do I fix green or cloudy water?

Green water is algae from low sanitiser — shock with chlorine, balance pH to 7.2-7.6, run the filter continuously and replace the cartridge. Cloudy water is fine particles or high pH — balance chemistry, add clarifier and clean the filter. If water greens within a day, your sanitiser is being consumed too fast; top up daily in warm weather.

How often should I change my filter?

Rinse the cartridge every 1-3 days in use and replace every 1-3 weeks in summer — sooner with heavy bather loads or a larger tub. A clogged filter is the #1 cause of E02 errors and poor heating, so keep spares on hand.

Why is my hot tub leaking?

Leaks come from the inflatable wall (punctures), the pump connections (worn O-rings) or the valves. Inflate fully and brush soapy water over the surface to spot bubbles. Most tubs ship with patches and replacement valves cost under £10; seam and pump-connection leaks are best pressure-tested by an engineer.

Costs & Repair vs. Replace

How much does a Lay-Z-Spa repair cost?

Many fixes are free or under £20 (filters, power cycles). A diagnostic call-out is typically £40-60. Common repairs: flow sensor £65-120, heater element £80-160, pump bearings £60-110, full pump replacement £180-280, leak repair £50-90.

Full repair cost breakdown

Is it worth repairing or buying new?

It depends on model and repair cost. Entry-level models (Miami, ~£300) tip toward replacement above ~£150 of repairs; premium models (Hollywood, ~£500-550) are worth repairing up to £250-300. Pump, heater and sensor faults on a tub under three years old are almost always worth fixing.
