CleverSpa Error Codes — What FC, HL, SL & SH Mean (And How to Fix Them)
After Lay-Z-Spa, CleverSpa is one of the most popular inflatable hot tub brands in the UK — sold through Argos, B&Q and Tesco — so we see plenty of them across Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch gardens. The good news is that CleverSpa uses a small, simple set of letter codes rather than dozens of numbered faults: FC, HL, SL and SH. This guide explains exactly what each one means and walks you through the fixes — most of which you can do yourself in a few minutes.
CleverSpa Error Code Quick Reference
- FC — Filter clean reminder: appears after ~168 hours of filtration (DIY — clean/replace filter, press FILTER)
- HL — High-limit / over-temperature: overheat protection has triggered (let it cool, check water level & filter)
- SL — Low temperature: water/pipes too cold, or a blockage stopping hot water circulating
- SH — Water-temperature sensor issue: usually a faulty thermistor needing replacement
CleverSpa also lists A1–A4 "potential cause" codes in the manual's troubleshooting table for the air-jet and heating systems — these aren't error codes shown on screen but a numbered checklist of likely causes, which we've folded into the relevant sections below.
FC — Filter Clean Reminder
FC is not a fault — it's a built-in reminder. After the filtration system has run for approximately 168 hours (one week of continuous filtering), the panel shows FC with a warning tone to tell you it's time to check the filter. On many models the pump and heater stop until you clear it.
- Switch the spa off and remove the filter cartridge from its housing.
- Rinse it under a garden hose at moderate pressure, flushing debris out from between the pleats. Never use washing-up liquid or detergent. If it's grey, matted or won't come clean, fit a fresh one — cartridges are cheap.
- Check the filter housing and inlet for any blockages, then refit the clean (or new) filter — making sure it's not screwed on too tightly, which can restrict flow.
- Press the FILTER button to clear the code. The FC and warning tone will disappear and the water temperature will return to the display.
Tip: sun cream, fake tan and soap all clog filters fast in summer, so in peak season you may hit FC more often than once a week.
HL — High-Limit / Over-Temperature Fault
HL is the overheat-protection code. Your CleverSpa has a safety thermostat that trips and shows HL (with a beep) if it detects a potentially unsafe temperature — typically the display reading is above 40°C. It can also appear when the system can't circulate water properly, so residual heat builds up around the element.
- Turn the spa off and unplug at the RCD. Leave it for around 30 minutes so the water and element can cool — the temperature should start to drop back into range.
- Check the water level is correct (too little water makes the element overheat).
- Check the filter is clean and the inlet isn't blocked — a clogged filter is a very common cause of HL because it starves the system of flow.
- Make sure the water isn't genuinely above 45°C (e.g. a small tub baking in full Bournemouth sun).
- Plug back in and restart. If HL clears, you're done.
If HL keeps returning after an extended period despite a clean filter, correct water level and a full cool-down, the high-limit thermostat or control board may be faulty — that's a job for an engineer rather than something to keep resetting.
HL Code Keeps Coming Back?
If you've cooled the tub, checked the water level and cleaned the filter but HL won't clear, it usually points to a faulty thermostat, sensor or control board. We'll match you with a local engineer who knows CleverSpa inflatable spas.

SL appears when the water or pipework is too cold for the system to function, or when a blockage is stopping warm water circulating. It's most common in cold weather — and on the south coast it can crop up on a chilly spring or autumn night even though our winters are mild.
- Pour some warm or hot water into the tub (from the hot tap or a bucket) to lift the overall temperature.
- Pour a little warm water into the top outlet as well — this helps free a cold or partially-blocked pipe so hot water can start circulating.
- Check the filter is clean and not screwed on too tightly, as a blockage there can also trigger SL.
- Power-cycle: turn off at the mains, remove the RCD plug, wait 10 seconds, plug back in and restart heating.
If your CleverSpa has the FreezeGuard / 365 feature, leaving it enabled over winter helps prevent the water dropping cold enough to trigger SL (and protects the pipes from freezing).
SH — Water Temperature Sensor Fault
SH flags a problem with the water-temperature sensor (thermistor) — the spa can't get a reliable reading, so it stops heating as a safety measure.
- First, rule out a glitch: unplug at the RCD, wait 30 seconds and restart. A one-off SH sometimes clears on a reset.
- Make sure the water level is correct and the sensor isn't sitting in an air pocket.
- If SH returns, the sensor itself is almost certainly faulty and needs replacing — it can't be repaired at home.
A dead or drifting sensor is a quick fix for an engineer once diagnosed, and far cheaper than a new pump unit.
Air Jets or Heating Not Working (No Code Shown)
If the air jets stop without a code, the manual's A1–A3 checklist points to the air pump being too hot (unplug, let it cool, then press the air-jets button), the pump being in a normal cooling cycle (wait 10 minutes and restart), or a motor fault if it still won't reset. If the heater won't run, work through: temperature set too low, dirty filter, low water level, then heating-element failure. See our dedicated guides below for the full DIY walk-through.
How Much Do CleverSpa Repairs Cost?
Typical costs in the Bournemouth area:
- Replacement filter cartridges: £6-18 (DIY — clears most FC reminders)
- Descaling the system: £0-15 DIY, or part of a service
- Water-temperature sensor (thermistor): £15-40 + labour
- High-limit thermostat: £20-50 + labour
- Air blower / bubble motor: £40-90 + labour
- Heating element: £40-100 + labour
- Pump / control board (PCB): £80-200 + labour
- Typical engineer call-out: £40-80 (often includes the first 30 mins of labour)
The most common CleverSpa codes — FC and HL — are usually down to a dirty filter or low water level, so always start there before assuming the pump or heater has failed. You can also call CleverSpa Aftersales on 0151 318 6163 if the tub is still under warranty.
