Hot Tub Error Codes by Brand — Find Your Code Fast
An error code on the control panel is your hot tub telling you exactly what's wrong — but only if you read it against the right brand. Every manufacturer uses its own system, so the same fault shows a completely different code depending on whether you own a Lay-Z-Spa, Intex PureSpa, MSpa or CleverSpa. This page is the quick index: find your brand, see what the code means, and jump to the full step-by-step fix guide.
Choose Your Brand
- Lay-Z-Spa / Bestway — codes E01, E02, E03, E04, E06, E08 etc.
- Intex PureSpa — codes E90, E94, E95, E96, E97, E98, E99
- MSpa — E0/F0, E1/F1 (newer) plus HEF, FEF, BBF (older)
- CleverSpa — letter codes FC, HL, SL, SH plus A1–A4

Same Fault, Different Code — A Cross-Brand Cheat Sheet
One of the most confusing things about inflatable hot tubs is that an identical underlying problem shows up as a totally different code on each brand. Here's how the most common faults translate across the four big UK brands:
No water flow (usually a blocked filter — the #1 fault)
- Lay-Z-Spa: E02 — fix guide
- Intex PureSpa: E90 / E91 — fix guide
- MSpa: E1 / F1 — fix guide
- CleverSpa: often FC (filter-clean reminder) — fix guide
On every brand the first move is the same: switch off, unplug at the RCD, remove and clean (or replace) the filter cartridge, clear the inlet/outlet grilles, then restart. In our hard-water coastal area, limescale is a frequent hidden cause.
Water too hot / overheating
- Lay-Z-Spa: heater cuts out (often no distinct code) — heating guide
- Intex PureSpa: E95 (too hot) / E96 / E98 — fix guide
- MSpa: SPH / temperature-high — fix guide
- CleverSpa: HL (high-limit / over-temp) — fix guide
Shade the control unit from direct sun, let the water cool, then power-cycle. In a Bournemouth heatwave a tub in full sun can genuinely overheat its control block.
Temperature / flow sensor fault
- Lay-Z-Spa: E03 (often), heating faults — fix guide
- Intex PureSpa: E99 (sensor) — fix guide
- MSpa: SL / SH (sensor low/high) — fix guide
- CleverSpa: SH (sensor) — fix guide
A failed thermistor (temperature sensor) usually needs replacing — that's engineer work, but it's an inexpensive part. A drifting sensor can also trigger false "too hot" codes on cool water.
Code Won't Clear After the DIY Checks?
If you've cleaned the filter, cleared the grilles and power-cycled the RCD but the code keeps coming back, it's likely a pump, sensor or control-board fault. We'll match you with a local engineer who works on every brand — Lay-Z-Spa, Intex, MSpa and CleverSpa.

No matter which logo is on your pump, a full power cycle clears the majority of one-off glitches: switch off, unplug at the RCD, wait 30 seconds, plug back in and restart. If the code returns immediately, it's a genuine fault — and the code is pointing you straight at it. Work through your brand's specific guide above rather than guessing.
