Hot Tub Control Panel Not Working? Blank Display & Unresponsive Buttons — What To Check
You press the button and get nothing — a black screen, no beep, or a display that lights up but ignores every press. A dead control panel is one of the most alarming faults because it feels like the whole tub has died. The reassuring news: it very rarely is. In the vast majority of cases the pump and heater are fine — the fault is in the little topside control pad, its cable, a fuse or a splash of trapped moisture, and several of those you can sort yourself in a few minutes.

1. Full Power Reset (Fixes Most Frozen Panels)
This is the single most effective fix and works for lockouts, frozen screens and software glitches. Turn the tub off completely — at the RCD plug on an inflatable, or the breaker on a hardshell — wait 30 to 60 seconds (long enough for the board to fully discharge), then power it back on. Give it a minute to boot and prime. A huge proportion of "dead panel" call-outs are cured by exactly this.
2. Is It Just Locked or Asleep?
Many topside panels have a child-lock (often a padlock symbol) or a "hold to power on" feature. Before assuming it's broken:
- Try a long, firm press (3-5 seconds) on the power button — some panels ignore quick taps.
- Look for a lock icon on the display; if present, check your manual for the unlock combo (usually holding two buttons together).
- On inflatable tubs, make sure the pump unit is properly clipped/seated on the liner — a bad seat can stop it powering the pad.
3. Has the RCD Tripped?

DIY Fix 1: Dry Out Moisture Behind the Panel
Moisture is the number-one killer of hot tub touchpads — and it's especially common in the damp, coastal air around Bournemouth and Poole. Condensation or a splash gets behind the overlay and either shorts the membrane (random/dead buttons) or fogs the display (flickering, gibberish, dim screen).
- Power off, then inspect the panel closely for condensation or water droplets behind the clear overlay.
- If you see damp, let it dry fully — somewhere warm, or a gentle hairdryer on low from a distance. Never soak or jet-wash near the pad.
- Check the seal/gasket around the panel edge; a perished seal lets water back in, so the fault returns. Reseating or resealing it often gives a permanent fix.
If drying it out restores normal function, you've saved yourself a new panel — just fix the seal so it doesn't come back.
DIY Fix 2: Check the Fuse (Powered Tub, Dead Panel)
If the tub clearly has power (you can hear the circulation pump, or the tub's internal light works) but the panel is blank, a blown fuse in the control box is a very common and cheap cause.
- Power off at the breaker/RCD first — non-negotiable.
- Open the control/equipment box and find the small cylindrical or blade fuse near the power input.
- A blown fuse looks darkened or has a broken filament. Replace it with the exact same rating — never a higher one.
- If the new fuse blows again straight away, there's an underlying fault (often a failing heater relay or a short) — stop and call an engineer.
DIY Fix 3: Reseat the Ribbon / Data Cable
The touchpad talks to the main board through a thin ribbon or data cable. Over time, vibration, damp or (on hardshell tubs) rodents can loosen, corrode or gnaw it — giving you a dead or erratic display even though everything else works.
- Power off, then trace the cable from the back of the topside panel to the main board connector.
- Gently unplug and reseat it to get a clean contact; look for green corrosion or bent pins on the connector.
- Check for chew marks or damaged insulation along its run.
A reseated connector often brings a "dead" panel straight back to life. If the cable or connector is corroded or damaged, it needs replacing.
When It's a Job for an Engineer
Lit Panel, Dead or Random Buttons → Failed Membrane Pad
If the display lights up normally but the buttons don't respond (or fire at random) after a reset and moisture check, the membrane switch behind the buttons has worn out. These are a known wear item — the thin conductive layers stop making contact with age and damp. The good news is the topside overlay/pad can usually be replaced on its own without touching the pricey control board, so it's one of the cheaper "engineer" fixes.
Totally Dead Everything → Power Supply or Main Board
If nothing runs at all — no pump, no heat, no panel — and the RCD and fuse are fine, the fault is likely in the power supply, transformer or main control board (PCB). An engineer will check the transformer voltage feeding the board and test the board itself. Boards do have a shelf life (roughly 10 years) and eventually fail.
Flickering / Wrong Temperature Readings
A panel showing a wildly wrong temperature, or flickering with an overheat/lockout, can point to a faulty temperature sensor or a stuck heater relay rather than the pad itself. Panel Still Dead After a Reset?
If a reset, fuse swap, moisture check and cable reseat haven't brought it back, it's time for a local engineer who knows your brand's control system — before a £60 pad becomes a whole new controller.
