If you own an inflatable hot tub anywhere around Bournemouth, Poole or the wider BCP and Avon area, there's one enemy quietly working against your heater every single day it's switched on: hard water. It doesn't announce itself. There's no error code that says "limescale." But it's the single most common preventable reason we're called out to a tub that's stopped heating — and the good news is that once you understand how it works, it's genuinely easy to stop.
How Hard Is the Water Around Here?
Our whole patch sits in a hard-water belt, but it's supplied by two different companies drawing from two different sources — and it's worth knowing which one you're on.

To put 295 mg/l in perspective: anything above 150 mg/l is officially "hard," and most of the Wessex Water supply across Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch runs at nearly double that — treated at Poole Town works from mineral-rich chalk aquifers. That's lovely for a cup of tea and terrible for a heater element.
The Science, in Plain English
Hard water simply means water with a lot of dissolved calcium and magnesium, picked up as rain filters down through chalk and limestone. Cold, those minerals stay invisibly dissolved. But heat is the trigger. When you warm the water to hot-tub temperature (37–40°C), the chemistry flips: the dissolved calcium can no longer stay in solution, so it precipitates out and crusts onto the hottest surface it can find.
In a hot tub, the hottest surface is the heater element — and right behind it, the flow sensor that watches water moving past the element. That's exactly where limescale loves to build, and exactly where it does the most damage.
Where limescale attacks — and what it does
- Heater element — a scale layer acts as insulation. The element runs hotter and longer to hit temperature, ages fast, and eventually overheats or burns out.
- Flow sensor — scale on the sensor can make it misread water flow, throwing a flow error (E02) or tripping the thermal cut-out (E04).
- Pipework & jets — narrowing internal bore reduces flow, which then makes flow errors worse and weakens the jets.
- Water clarity — heavy scaling can leave water stubbornly cloudy even when your chlorine is spot-on.
The Warning Signs You Have a Scale Problem
Limescale is gradual, so it's easy to miss until the heater fails. Catch it early by watching for:
- White, crusty flakes at the waterline or floating in the water
- A heater that's noticeably slower to warm up than it used to be

- A recurring flow or heater error that clears for a while after a clean, then comes back
- Water that won't clear despite correct chlorine and pH
How to Protect Your Hot Tub From Hard Water
This is the part that matters, because almost all of this damage is preventable for a few pounds a year. Four habits do 95% of the work:
- Use a scale inhibitor on every refill. Sold as "no-scale," "protect" or "scale & stain" products — a capful keeps calcium suspended so it can't crust onto the element. This is the single most effective thing you can do.
- Keep pH in range (7.2–7.6). High pH dramatically accelerates scaling on top of hard water. A cheap test strip habit pays for itself.
- Descale annually. A proper element and pipework descale — either DIY with a spa-safe descaler and a 50/50 vinegar mix or as part of an annual service — resets the clock. In this hard-water area we'd say this is non-negotiable.
- Refresh the water on schedule. Don't run the same fill for months; the more you top up an evaporating tub, the more concentrated the minerals become.
Do those four things and a heater that might otherwise die in two or three seasons of hard water will comfortably outlast the rest of the tub.
Already Scaled Up? Repair vs Replace
If the damage is done, it's not always terminal. Caught before the element burns out, a descale of the element and pipework often restores full heating for £45–80. If the element has already overheated and failed, or the flow sensor's packed in, it's a replacement job — typically £80–150 including labour on an inflatable tub.
