Here's something a lot of hot tub owners in Ringwood don't realise until their heater packs in: Ringwood's water still scales up a heater. Unlike the Dorset towns nearby — Wimborne, Ferndown and Poole, which sit in the Wessex Water supply at close to 295 mg/l — Ringwood is served by Bournemouth Water, now part of the South West Water group. It's a genuinely different supply: drawn largely from the Hampshire Avon and the chalk aquifer that runs beneath the valley. Bournemouth Water classes it as moderately hard — softer than the Wessex supply next door, but still comfortably above the point where limescale starts building on a heated element.

Why does that matter for your hot tub? When water is heated to 37–40°C, dissolved calcium comes out of solution and crusts onto the hottest surfaces first — the heater element and flow sensor. A scaled element runs hotter, works harder, and eventually trips or burns out. It's one of the most common reasons Lay-Z-Spa heaters fail early across this part of the Avon valley, and it's almost entirely preventable:

• Use a scale inhibitor every time you refill — a few pounds a bottle, and it keeps calcium in suspension.
• Keep pH in range (7.2–7.6) — high pH accelerates scaling on top of hard water.
• Descale annually — a proper element and pipework descale as part of a service.
• Watch for the warning signs — white crusty flakes at the waterline, a heater that's slow to warm, or cloudy water despite good chlorine all point to scale.

The River Avon, Flood Ground & the New Forest Damp Factor

Ringwood is an old market town built right on the River Avon, and its geography is the second thing we keep in mind on call-outs here. The Avon splits into several channels through the town — around The Bickerley, the meadows and Bickerley Green — and Ringwood has a long, well-documented history of the river spilling onto low ground after heavy winter rain. Gardens on the valley floor, and out at Ellingham, Ibsley, Harbridge and Bisterne along the flood plain, can sit close to a high water table and persistent ground damp for weeks at a time.

The flip side of the valley is the heath. Ashley Heath, St Leonards, St Ives and Poulner run up onto the sandy New Forest fringe — Ringwood Forest, Moortown and the National Park boundary — where properties tend to be large, rural and detached, on big plots. That's exactly where hot tubs end up: on decking well back from the house, at the end of a long outdoor extension lead, fully exposed to the weather. Either way — damp Avon-side plot or exposed heathland garden — moisture is the enemy of the electrics. Damp ground under a tub, a weather-worn outdoor socket, or a long exposed lead can all let water into the RCD/GFCI plug and control box, and unprotected pipework is more prone to frost over winter. On Ringwood call-outs we always check the plug, lead and control-box seals for damp and corrosion — a five-minute inspection that heads off an expensive control-board failure. A new Lay-Z-Spa Miami is about £379, so any repair under £150 is almost always worth it — especially if the rest of the tub is sound. Where it gets marginal is a full pump replacement (£200+) on a tub that's already three or more years old and has been fighting Ringwood's mineral-rich Avon-valley water without a scale inhibitor.
