Hot Tub Tripping the Electrics — Brand-by-Brand Causes
If your inflatable hot tub keeps tripping the RCD plug or your house fuse box, the likely culprit — and how it shows itself — varies by brand. A Lay-Z-Spa or CleverSpa that trips the instant you press heat almost always has a shorted heater element; an MSpa or Intex PureSpa is more often a damp connector or socket/circuit problem. The Single Most Useful Clue: When Does It Trip?
- Trips the instant it's plugged in → suspect the RCD/power lead, pump wiring or a dead short.
- Trips only when you press the heater → the heater element has most likely shorted to earth (the #1 mechanical cause on every brand).
- Trips only when bubbles/jets run → suspect the air blower motor or its wiring.
- Trips randomly / in damp weather → moisture ingress in the plug, RCD box or connector causing earth leakage.

Lay-Z-Spa / Bestway Tripping the Electrics
Bestway's own guidance is clear that many trips are circuit or socket related, but when the tub itself is at fault it's usually the heater. The usual suspects:
- Shorted PTC heater element: if it trips the moment the heater icon goes red, the element has most likely failed internally to earth — common after corrosion from poor water chemistry or scale. Engineer test & replace; element ~£30–60 + fitting.
- Faulty RCD / PRCD power lead: the black RCD box on the cable can fail and trip on its own — try the Reset → Test → Reset sequence; if it won't hold, the lead needs replacing.
- Overloaded or shared circuit: Bestway specifically warn against extension leads and sharing the socket with other heavy appliances — the pump draws up to 2,850W heating + bubbles.
- Damp ingress: water in the plug or pump connector after rain causes earth-leakage trips — dry everything and retry on a dry indoor socket.

CleverSpa Tripping the Electrics
CleverSpa trips are very commonly the heater element — repair specialists list "spa trips when the heater button is pressed" as a textbook element-short symptom. Key causes:
- Shorted 1800W heater element (most common): the element becomes pitted or internally shorts to earth, tripping the RCD when energised. Often caused by imbalanced pH/sanitiser corroding the coil. ~£30–60 part.
- Stuck / failed water pressure (flow) switch: debris and limescale clog the pressure switch — it can stick, mis-fire the element and contribute to trips and HL faults. A cheap part worth replacing alongside the element.
- Faulty RCD power lead: if there's no power through the RCD at all (or it won't reset), the RCD plug unit itself is the fix once the socket is ruled out.
- Limescale & chemistry: our hard-water coastal area accelerates element pitting — keep pH/sanitiser balanced to prolong element life.

MSpa Tripping the Electrics
MSpa's own troubleshooting leans heavily on the socket, circuit and damp before the tub itself (the MSpa pump draws up to 2,300W):
- Wrong socket / extension lead: MSpa explicitly say do not use an extension lead — try a different, preferably indoor, grounded single socket.
- Overloaded circuit: unplug fridges/freezers/kettles on the same circuit; trips when you press heat often mean the circuit can't take the combined load.
- Damp PRCD / connector: moisture in the RCD box or pump connector after rain is a frequent earth-leakage trip on outdoor MSpa setups — dry thoroughly, then Reset → Test → Reset.
- Heater / element fault (older units): if it only trips on heat after the socket and damp are ruled out, suspect the heater element or relay — engineer territory.

Intex PureSpa Tripping the Electrics
Intex units run on a GFCI plug (the equivalent of the RCD) and most trips trace back to the supply or moisture before the heater:
- GFCI / socket fault: press TEST then RESET on the GFCI; if it won't hold with nothing else on the circuit, the GFCI plug or socket is the issue.
- Damp plug or connector: dry the plug and GFCI thoroughly — earth leakage from moisture is the classic intermittent Intex trip.
- Heater element / thermal fuse: a trip only when heating (sometimes alongside an E97 dry-fire / thermal-fuse code) points to the element or thermal protection — engineer test.
- Overloaded circuit: as with every brand, give the pump its own dedicated socket.

All four brands fit a built-in RCD/PRCD/GFCI on the plug — its whole job is to cut power the instant it detects current leaking to earth. So a trip is usually a safety device working correctly, not failing. On Lay-Z-Spa and CleverSpa the most common genuine fault is a heater element that has shorted internally to earth, which is exactly what an RCD is built to catch. On MSpa and Intex the manufacturers' own guidance puts the socket, circuit overload and damp ingress first — so on those brands it's worth being more thorough about the supply before you open the pump. Either way, the diagnostic order is the same: socket → circuit load → damp → then the heater.
